Project Overview
A mining operation in Cajamarca, Peru, required a guard filtration system for a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) installation. The filtration system handles two distinct process liquids: RO Feed Water and Clean-In-Place (CIP) cleaning solutions.
Due to the critical nature of the application and the scale of the operation, the project required large-capacity vessels capable of handling high flow rates while adhering to rigorous engineering standards. Fil-Trek supplied a total of 21 high-capacity multi-bag filter housings.
Project Requirements
The customer provided extensive specifications beyond standard ASME code requirements, focusing on:
- Strict NDE & Welding: Comprehensive Non-Destructive Examination requirements, including Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI), Positive Material Identification (PMI), and Visual Testing (VT), alongside strict welding procedure documentation.
- Seismic Design: The installation site in Peru is located in a seismically active zone. The vessels required structural design verification to withstand potential earthquake loads.
- Third-Party Inspection: Mandatory third-party inspection points were required for all 21 vessels during the manufacturing process.
Fil-Trek Solution
Fil-Trek executed the design, fabrication, and project management to meet the high-specification requirements of the mining sector.
Engineering & Seismic Compliance
Our engineering team performed seismic calculations to ensure the vessel design met the specific seismic conditions of the Cajamarca region. The design process included sizing the vessels for optimized flux rates based on customer process specifications.
Additionally, we generated Installation, Operation, and Maintenance (IOM) manuals tailored specifically to the custom design and specification requirements of this project.
Quality Control & Project Management
To satisfy the extensive documentation and inspection requirements:
- QA Coordination: Our Quality Assurance team coordinated 3rd party inspections for all 21 vessels, ensuring no hold-points delayed the manufacturing schedule.
- Stakeholder Management: We maintained continuous communication with the customer’s large approval team to manage document submittals and maintain project deadlines.
Filtration Media Selection
For the filter media, Fil-Trek selected Mera Felt polypropylene bags for both the RO Feed and CIP applications.
- Chemical Resistance: Polypropylene offers the necessary chemical resistance to withstand the CIP cleaning solutions without degradation.
- Operational Efficiency: These bags provided a competitive economic price point while meeting the filtration efficiency required for RO protection.
- Aftermarket Support: As a stocked item, we ensure same-day shipping for replacement bags, minimizing potential downtime for the mine.
